Hi

I am a new 928 S4 owner. Bought an 88 Red/Black 5-speed about a month ago. Only 42,000 miles, mint condition, almost no records. Am looking into the timing belt / water pump replacement as it seems to be the conventional wisdom to replace. Checking on Ebay I see an almost too cheap, brand new water pump; $115 versus $250 to $350 on Pelican / Performance Products. Here is the link:

Can anyone advise me if they have dealt with "Deutsche Parts" before? Or maybe used this water pump? Any advice?

Thanks

Welcome to the club.
There is no such thing as new pump for $115 or almost! - a metal impeller can fail and chew up the front of the block, look for a plastic impeller -$250 and up gets you a part that will work when installed and will last. Take this for what you paid for it.

Do not install any part you get off of e-bay unless it has been vetted by either the OC or Rennlist.

Water pump wise, I will only install the new version of the Laso pump supplied by 928sRus and a few other vendors now. I'd consider installing the Porsche pump, but at $900.00, I don't have many takers.

I do this daily so I kinda have a slight bias on what should and shouldn't be installed.

Thank you Sean and Neil! That is exactly the kind of advice I needed.

I will contact 928sRus.

Another question...

Coventional timing belts $30.00. I have heard it is wise to replace every 45,000 miles or so. 928srus shows a "racing belt" for $168 that is purported to last 3-times as long. Would anyone here recommend this belt and not changing for 135,000 miles??

Also, how do you know when your idle control valve is needing replacement?

Thanks!

Personally, I stick with the standard Gates belt. I'm not sure which brand Sean likes to install. The racing belt works the same but is stiffer I am told. They say the tention is set the same and that it is not harder on the gears

Stick with the gates belt (normal) for now. This fall I'm going to be using my car as a test using the new cam gears, porken tensioner, Gates racing belt and keep an eye on any abnormal wear. Should be interesting.

The racing belt is geared more towards those that are using the cars on the track or those that regularly get used harder than a normal street driven car.
