Another newbie question.

The oil pressure gauge (on my '88 928 S4) reads between 3 to 4 BAR. What does this mean? Is this an issue or should it always be at the 5 BAR indicator?

thx

RJ

It sounds about right.
Others with more definitive answers might offer better input.
What I see for oil pressure will depend on the oil I am using and the temperature, as well as the rpms.
Generally I will see 5 bar, or maximum, with colder temperatures and high rpms.
Once the motor is warm and it is idling or not under heavy load, I think 3-4 bar would be about right.

A post I found that may help you includes the following:
"Porsche only provides data on minimum hot oil pressure at 4-5000rpm - you need 5bar!.
Most 928s will show 4bar at 2000rpm and this is great!

As long as the hot idle OP is around 2bar and above at idle all is well. Oil flow will be the same at idle whether you have 3bar or 2bar etc. but it is worth replacing the oil cooler's thermostat if a consistently low OP occurs at hot idle"

1 bar is about 14 psi...or 1 atmosphere of pressure IIRC. When my cars are stone cold they usually read close to if not 5 bar. When fully hot on a SUPER hot day they will go down to about 2 bar... Though my '95 is either about to die or the gauge is wrong (I hope it is that!) or needs heavier oil so that it will stay about 1.5 bar when fully hot on a hot day... It is triggering the insufficient oil pressure warning.
