I let the window on the passenger side down completely; it would not go back up. I hear and feel the motor turning in each direction, the window does not move. It seems the mechanism that attaches to the window has dis-engaged. Fortunately the car is garaged. Does anyone know the source of good instructions for removing the door panel and reattaching the mechanism to the window?

I always check Greg's site first, and it has removal instructions for a number of years: http://nichols.nu/cat06.htm

I had a failure in my car once, and it was when the nylon roller broke so the window fell off the track. I suspect you could get a replacement roller. At the time a machine shop owning neighbor just made me up some in metal that worked fine (I replaced both sides).

Its not that hard, just look close at the panel and start removing screws.
Read the page Stan gave you and when you put it back together do not over tighten the screws

Stan,

I took the door panel off. I can see that part of the window guide is broken and I can see that it looks like the roller you described. My main question is how do you get access to those components? Th access port is small and you can really get your hand in there.

It seems I would have to pull the window out...any advice?

It has been a while, but I recall it was doable, and my hands are not tiny :D

Order the roller and the rivet that retains it.

Move the window to the top and securely tape it in place to give you more room. Repeat - "securely tape it in place" - you do not want a guillotine to fall on your hand!

Unbolt the window regulator - the entire lift motor, gearbox and aluminum arm. Wriggle it out of the door. It will come out more easily if you run the arm to a specific configuration - I'm sorry, but it has been so long since I did this that I don't remember whether the arm should be extended or retracted. Be very careful when you move the arm - it is quick and powerful, and could cause severe personal and property damage.

Once you have the unit out, drill the rivet out, put the new rivet and roller in place, and peen the end of the rivet. Wriggle it back in, feed the roller into the track, and reattach the window.

WYAIT (While You Are In There):
- Lubricate the motor bearings, gearbox and arm joints and gears.
- If your window rattles, you can put a few nylon wire ties around the white window guides, or you can replace them.
- Be sure that you properly replace the plastic water protector sheet. If it is damaged, go to the dollar store and buy a cheap ($1) clear shower curtain.
- Lubricate the door lock, hinges, etc.

Thanks especially to Wally. The window is all the way down (that's the way it was when it failed). The problem was a broken nylon wheel. I am having a replacement wheel made out of aluminum. I removed the window moter and lift assembly to have this done. I did not have to remove the window.

After I get the the new wheel (the shop will do the peening) I will re-install all parts. Hoping I won't have many adjustments and anticipating that re-installing the lift mechanism will be a little tricky.

I'm glad that you are getting the problem solved - but did want to point out for other folks that the Porsche nylon roller and rivet set costs about $6 plus shipping from your 928 vendors.

You definitely do not have to remove the window, but it is easier if you securely tape it in the closed position.

I finally finished this job. The problem was the plastic wheel which rides in the window runner broke. I was going to have the replacement wheel made of aluminum when I considered the noise and wear that might result I did not do that. However I did have the replacement wheel made of a much nore durable matrial (nylon), where the replacement wheels are made of plastic.

I posted a couple of pictures to help with some of the references found online. I was able to do this job woth out having to remove the window. I absolute best part of the story it that my car is back on the road again. Thanks for the advice gang.

Glad that you got it fixed, and happy to try to help.

While the stock rollers are usually referred to as "plastic", they are also nylon, and typically last twenty to thirty years. At $6, most folks just go with the stock parts.

I would hesitate to guess the relative frequency of failures in the window system. Leaders appear to be:
Switches (can sometimes be repaired)
Motors (can usually be repaired)
Rollers (replace)
Nylon Guides (can be patched w/wire ties, or replaced)
Rubber and Felt Seals (replace)

Most cars need the door internals, including the window system, cleaned, adjusted and lubricated, with worn/aged/failed parts replaced. It is usually worth the effort to go in, clean, lube and inspect to start with.

I was just kind of thinking of the mechanical bits that make it go up and down... True the switches can be iffy, but they usually just get worse over time vs. a catastrophic failure. Also the rubber/felt guides and seals are usually not a deal breaker, but do mess things up.

Speaking of which... How much are those damn felt guides and how easy/hard are they to replace??? My S4's are SHOT! They totally ruined the window tint on those windows too which is VERY frustrating!

BTW, Wally it is SOOOO GOOD having you hanging out with us here! You are one of the most technically skilled and knowledgeable 928 guys I know and your counsel here is priceless! Thanks for hanging with us my friend!

Door Window - Felt Guide '77-'95 (928.537.085.03)

These puppies are $35-40 each, and are a pain to install. While it doesn't make installation easier, you can actually buy good-quality felt at the fabric store and recover the old ones, saving about $150...

The potential problems with felt guides and fit, not to mention breaking is what made the approach I took to this repair most gratifying. Thank goodness I did not have to remove the window to do work on the lift assembly or motor.

Big Deal Here...the plastic rollers you buy do not fit the window rail at the bottom of the window the diameter is too wide. I had mine trimmed by a local machine shop.

I bought the rollers from 928 International. Here's a copy of the email response from them, I bought a few other items:

This was not a fluke because I subsequently ordered 2 more. The roller diameter is too large to fit in the rail, they are also too wide. The reason I bought two more is that I plan to replace the one in the driver's side door this winter.

There is no uncertainty about this because I had to make multiple trips to the machine shop before getting the roller trimmed to the proper size; I insisted that I would not remove the window. After we got the right size the machine shop kept the right dimensions for the one I will do this winter. Also because I bought two I have spare. So if you would like me to send a sample of what the wrong size looks like I can do that.
